Following Wednesday’s announcement by World Athletics of a new genetic testing regime to determine the eligibility conditions to compete in the female category for world ranking competitions, the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) is now in the process of contacting the country’s national female representatives, both local and overseas-based.
All Jamaican female athletes heading to the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan in September will now have to be tested for the SRY gene to determine their biological sex.
They’ll be required to take a cheek swab or blood test just once in their lifetime. Former JAAA president and head of the medical committee, Dr Warren Blake says the local governing body has gotten the ball rolling.
The new regulations will come into effect on September 1 and will be applied to the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo that begins on September 13.
