Rules about what can go into your blue bin have expanded, beginning today.

More items have been added to the list of things that can be recycled, as the province’s blue box program has completely shifted financial responsibility to producers.

Starting today, you can still recycle the same items as before.

But things like food bags and wrappers have been added to the list, such as bread bags, produce bags, frozen food wrappers, snack wrappers, cereal box liners, milk bags and drink pouches.

Large plastic bags are on the new list, as well as coffee packaging, such as coffee bags, takeout coffee cups and lids, and empty and rinsed coffee pods.

Toothpaste tubes can now be recycled. The same goes for floss containers and deodorant tubes.

Your single-use food items like takeout containers and cutlery, cups, lids and straws can now go into the blue box, as well as blister packs like the ones used for pills or small electronics.

Paper laminates like ice cream cartons can also be recycled, along with Styrofoam cups, trays, egg cartons and packing peanuts.

Things like hardcover books, glass from windows or cups and plastic toys cannot be recycled, and you’re advised to return all alcoholic beverage containers to participating retailers.
