For the second time in less than a month, the Vancouver Whitecaps have lost a talented young Canadian player.
Multiple reports on Saturday stated that the Whitecaps have lost 25-year-old Ali Ahmed to Norwich City of England’s Championship League, which is a tier below the Premier League.
TSN’s Matthew Scianitti is reporting that Ahmed, primarily a midfielder with the Caps, will be Norwich City’s left wing. Scianitti also reported that Ahmed traveled to Norwich City earlier in the week to complete a physical, prior to signing the deal.
Norwich City is currently one of the worst teams in the Championship, ranking 22nd among 24 teams. They would currently be relegated to the third-tier (League One) if the season were to end today.
Clearly, they were looking for a boost to avoid relegation, as the January transfer window for soccer opened up.
Ahmed had been a member of the Whitecaps organization since 2019, when he first had a trial run with the organization’s youth academy. He worked his way up the system, playing for the Whitecaps FC 2 in MLS Next Pro.
In 2022, he made his debut for the Whitecaps, where his performances caught the attention of Canada’s national men’s soccer team, which he’s been a part of since 2023.
Ahmed was also a key player for the Caps during their magical run to the MLS Finals. Heck, he even scored the last Whitecaps goal in 2025, tying the contest against Inter Miami FC in the 60th minute.
Ahmed’s contract with Norwich City is reportedly a two-year deal.
Unless they add another player, the Whitecaps will focus on internal improvement following Ahmed’s departure. Ryan Gauld and Jayden Nelson were two players who often subbed in for Ahmed, although Nelson is no longer with the team. Younger players like Jeevan Badwal and Kenji Cabrera could also help step into that role.
Of course, the attacking midfield got a massive boost earlier in the season when Thomas Müller joined the Whitecaps.
