One System to Rule Them All: NL Health Goes Digital This Spring

(VOCM News)

Major changes are coming to the way in which information is collected, stored and shared in the health care system.

A single, digital health system will be introduced in the spring, something NLHS is calling the “greatest transformation” the province’s health system will have ever seen.

NLHS says the adoption of CorCare will not result in any layoffs, and the health authority is working with workers and their unions to ensure they’re supported through the transition.

The new system will enable the collection, management, storage and transmission of electronic medical records including patient charts.

That may cause privacy concerns, but the province’s privacy commissioner, Kerry Hatfield says there are a number of pieces of legislation, including the Personal Health Information Act (or PHIA) that come into play to ensure privacy is protected.

“That law (PHIA) is our protection,” says Hatfield, “it gives the health care providers rules about what personal health care information they can collect from us, it sets limits on what they can use it for, and who they can disclose it to.”
