The WNBA finds itself at an interesting crossroads. Over the last few seasons, the league has seen exponential growth. Caitlin Clark’s arrival has been a factor, but the sport continues to grow even in her absence. However, the league’s next season is already in jeopardy.

It’s time for the league and the WNBPA to sign a new CBA, or Collective Bargaining Agreement. Without one, the 2026 season will start under a lockout with no games being played. Both parties have been locked in an intense negotiation with no end in sight, but that might be coming to an end.

“I am very confident that we will get a deal done,” 3-time WNBA champion Breanna Stewart said, as per Yahoo Sports. “It’s kind of unfortunate that it’s taken this long.”

Stewart is one of the W’s biggest names. She has three championships and two Finals MVPs to her name. The New York Liberty star has won two MVPs and is a perennial All-Star as well. At 31, she is one of the pillars of the league and her vote of confidence in a new CBA being signed is a big deal.

A lockout is about the worst thing that can happen to the WNBA at this juncture. Rival leagues in women’s basketball are growing, and money is flowing into the sport. If the W wants to remain at the top of the pyramid, then Stewart’s prediction simply must come true. With the Jan 9 deadline looming, all eyes are on the WNBA.
