A very good move by general manager Kent Hughes is starting to pay off for the Montreal Canadiens.

Alexandre Texier didn’t take long to win over Montreal. When Kent Hughes signed him to a one-year, $1 million contract, it was a simple bet.

We’re talking about a forward who had just played eight games with the St. Louis Blues, with a single assist to his name. Nothing flashy, nothing loud, but plenty of potential.

Since then, things have changed quickly.

Texier now has 14 points in 22 games with the Canadiens this season. This isn’t a tiny sample of two lucky nights.

It’s starting to look like a legitimate acquisition that fits. You can feel it around the team as well.

When a player comes in with that kind of pace, it gets people talking, it sparks reactions, and it applies pressure in the right direction.

The acquisition of Alexandre Texier by Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens is starting to become a solid success

One million dollars is an amount that doesn’t force you to dig in if things go south.

But when it works out, it delivers a value-for-money return that makes everyone smile, from the bench to the stands, as we saw notably last night at the Bell Centre.

Fourteen points in 22 games with Montreal, after a short stint in St. Louis where things weren’t clicking. For the Canadiens, this is exactly the type of find that can change part of a season.

If this keeps up, Kent Hughes is going to be told once again that he “stole” a player. And in the free-agent market, that kind of steal is rare.
