Cannabis seized in Port Hope

OPP have seized millions of dollars worth of cannabis plants and buds, along with making multiple arrests, after serving a search warrant in Port Hope.

Port Hope firefighters previously responded to a structure fire at a property on 5th Line in Port Hope in December. While responding to that incident, they notified police about cannabis that was being grown on the property.

On Thursday, officers served a search warrant at the property, seizing more than 7,600 illicit cannabis plants and 100 lbs of dried illicit cannabis bud valued at more than $3.8 million.

As a result of the investigation, eight people were charged with unlawfully cultivate, propagate or harvest a cannabis plant and possession for the purpose of distribution. Five people from North York were charged.  They are 28-year-old Duc Le, 44-year-old Hoang Nga, 44-year-old Thu Nguyen, 43-year-old Thi Nguyen, and 49-year-old Ngyenthi Sang. The other three people charged were from Scarborough, and include 52-year-old Shua Tang-Zhong, 51-year-old Zhonghua Ye. and 51-year-old Yin Yang.

The accused were released from custody and are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg.
