Toronto Argonauts release Miyan Williams after rookie season, sign one

The Toronto Argonauts have released American running back Miyan Williams.

The 24-year-old signed with the team early last year and dressed for four regular-season games, making two starts. He rushed 21 times for 102 yards and caught 16 passes for 90 yards before suffering a season-ending injury.

The five-foot-nine, 225-pound native on Cincinnati, Ohio was a standout at Ohio State University where he rushed for 1,554 yards and 20 touchdowns over 31 collegiate games. He also caught 18 passes for 143 yards and was named third-team All-Big Ten in 2022.

The Argonauts had the CFL’s worst rushing attack in 2025 as Williams, Deonta McMahon, Kevin Brown, Khalan Laborn, and Spencer Brown shared duties at running back, none of whom managed to reach 5.0 yards per carry.

Toronto has also signed Canadian linebacker Jalen Rayam, who was selected in the fifth round of the 2025 CFL Draft.

The six-foot, 225-pound defender finished his collegiate career at the University of Texas at El Paso in 2024, though he missed most of the season due to injury. He previously played at Middle Tennessee State and the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

The Toronto Argonauts finished third in the East Division standings in 2025 with a 5-13 record, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2019. Franchise quarterback Chad Kelly was unable to play all season due to a fractured leg he suffered in the East Final the previous year, giving way to Nick Arbuckle, who threw for 4,370 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions to be named the team’s candidate for Most Outstanding Player.

The Argonauts ranked seventh in net offence, sixth in net defence, and seventh with a turnover differential of minus-eight. The club’s leading rusher was Spencer Brown with 314 yards, leading receiver was Dejon Brissett with 907 yards, and leading tackler was Cameron Judge with 79 tackles. Toronto ranked ninth in attendance with average crowds of 15,109, which was a 0.1 percent decrease from the previous year.
