Thanks to four days of exceptional golf, Richard T. Lee is the first Canadian golfer to join the LIV Golf League.
The Toronto native dominated the LIV Golf League Promotions event at Black Diamond Ranch in Lecanto, Fla., a tournament that offered three spots in the league for 2026. Lee shot rounds of 64, 66, 64, 65 to win by five shots .
Lee, the fifth-ranked Canadian on the Official World Golf Ranking, will play as a wild card on a tour that is dominated by team play.
The fields on LIV are built around 13 four-player teams, with five additional spots for players who are not part of any team. The individuals can also be added to teams should any player not be able to compete that week.
“It feels amazing,” Lee told TSN after his win. “Hopefully a Canadian team happens soon.”
Lee, 35, has played most of his golf in Asia, splitting his time between the Asian Tour and the Korean Golf Tour. He has been a stalwart on both circuits, finishing high up the money lists on a consistent basis. Last year, he was 25th on the Asian Tour and won a tournament on the Korean circuit, his fourth career victory on that tour.
He also played the RBC Canadian Open last year, starting with rounds of 69 and 66 to sit just a few shots off the lead. He ended up finishing a respectable 36th. He won’t be able to improve on that this year as playing in the Promotions tournament and advancing to LIV means he will be suspended from further PGA Tour play.
Last month, Lee tried to make it through PGA Tour qualifying school but fell short. It was at that point he made the decision to try the LIV Golf Promotions tournament. It now seems like a wise decision. His victory not only advanced him to the full LIV schedule, but he won $200,000 (U.S.).
“It’s been a good three years trying to get onto the LIV Golf Tour,” Lee said during the trophy ceremony. “I’m sure I have a lot to learn out there, and I’m looking forward to playing with the best in the world.”
When he joins LIV, he won’t be playing for the team prize money, but the purses for individuals are still lucrative. The winner of a LIV event receives $4 million.
Lee will play his first LIV event in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia starting Feb. 4.
