Issa strikes gold as Jamaica ends 37th Caribbean Amateur Junior Golf Championship with three medals

Jamaica closed out the 37th Caribbean Amateur Junior Golf Championship (CAJGC) at the Grand Reserve Golf Club, Rio Grande in Puerto Rico on Thursday with three trophies – one gold and two bronze while the team placed fourth overall. 

Co-captain Mattea Issa bagged her first gold in the championship after being runner-up in every age group category that she competed in.

Her gold came in her last year as a junior, competing in the 18 and Under category. She scored three over par 75 in the final round for end on a combined total of 16 over par 231 (83, 73) to take home the coveted Peter Hale trophy. 

Kingston Burke who also competed in the same category picked up bronze.  He total score of 237 came on the back of 83, 77 and another 77 in rounds one, two and three respectively. 

The other trophy, a bronze, went to Alessandra Coe who made her final appearance in the 13 and Under age group.

She posted consistent scores of 85, 80 and 81 for a total score of 246. She was getting her first trophy in the championship after three attempts. She was joined in the category by Francesca Black who placed fifth with a total score of 263. 

The other Jamaican in the championship, Mallaina Williams, came seventh in the 15 and under age group with scores of 86, 86, 84 respectively in rounds one, two and three. 

Kemari Morris’ fourth place finish in the 15 and Under category made him the best placed Jamaican male in the championship. He posted scores of 74, 80 and 78 for an overall score of 262. 

Cameron Coe, who competed in the same category, ended in 15th place after posting 266 overall. 

13 and Under player Shasa Redlefsen was seventh with a total score of 241 (83, 79, 79). 

Co-captain Ryan Lue in the 18 and Under category posted the best individual score of all the Jamaica players of even par 72 in the first round for second place at that point but closed the championship in in 14th place tied with two other players with a combined score of 240.
