An investigation continues into a three-vehicle collision on Highway 400 involving an off-duty police officer in Bradford, Ont.

An off-duty York Regional police officer was seriously injured in a three-vehicle collision in Bradford, Ont., that snarled traffic on Highway 400 Tuesday morning.

It happened at approximately 3:45 a.m. near Simcoe County Road 88. Ontario Provincial Police say a transport truck, a pickup truck, and an SUV were involved.

The off-duty officer was transported to a trauma centre. One other person was taken to hospital with minor injuries, the OPP said.

The northbound lanes of the highway were closed for several hours for cleanup and an investigation, but reopened shortly after 1 p.m.

Speaking from the scene, OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said the crash occurred after the transport truck lost power and came to a stop on the right shoulder, partially blocking a live lane of traffic.

“A short time later, a passenger vehicle struck the back of that tractor trailer setting it out of control and it was struck again by a second passenger vehicle,” he said.
