Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin stepped down from his position on Tuesday after 19 seasons in Pittsburgh.

The Steelers are on the hunt for their fourth head coach since 1969, and they may consider a familiar face from a division rival. With the Baltimore Ravens parting ways with head coach John Harbaugh and the Cleveland Browns letting go of Kevin Stefanski after Week 18, both names could potentially be a good fit for Pittsburgh.

CBS Sports’ Bryan DeArdo listed several potential coaching candidates the Steelers should hire, highlighting Stefanski as a noteworthy option among them.

“Pittsburgh is obviously familiar with Stefanski as he was the coach of division rival Cleveland for the last six years,” DeArdo wrote on Tuesday. “Stefanski’s greatest moment as Browns coach actually came at the Steelers’ expense after Cleveland upset Pittsburgh in the 2020 wild card round.

“This past season, Stefanski’s Browns recorded a 10-6 upset win over the Steelers that prevented Pittsburgh from clinching the AFC North division title a week early. That win marked the fourth straight year where the Browns defeated the Steelers on their home turf.”

Stefanski coached the Browns for six seasons, finishing with a 45-56 record. Despite this, he led the team to the playoffs twice, in 2020 and 2023. Under his leadership, and with quarterbacks like Baker Mayfield and Joe Flacco, his offense found a measure of success.

The main concern is that the Steelers lack a franchise quarterback, especially with the uncertainty surrounding Aaron Rodgers and his potential retirement. This could pose a challenge for Stefanski if the Steelers do hire him.
