Calgarians used 503 million litres yesterday, which is still above our 485-million-litre daily target.

“Thank you to everyone who is cutting back on their personal water use. Until the feeder main is back in service, our system remains fragile” says Calgary Emergency Management Agency Chief Susan Henry. “It is still very important to keep saving water to make sure we have enough supply available for everyone, especially hospitals, care homes and firefighting.”

If every person who uses Calgary’s water system saves just 25–30 liters per person per day we can reach sustainable levels. These three actions can deliver immediate savings:

Flush only when necessary.Shorten showers.Run full loads only.

RESTORING WATER SERVICE

Crews have collected water samples and are testing to confirm our water meets or exceeds drinking water standards set by Alberta Health Services (AHS) and Alberta Environment and Protected Areas (EPA). We are testing turbidity (how clear the water is), residual chlorine (to ensure adequate disinfection) and harmful bacteria.

Once testing confirms our water is safe to drink, we will slowly open valves to reconnect the feeder main to the larger distribution network. Then we will turn on pumps at the Bearspaw Treatment Plant to push water through the feeder main. This multi-phase process carries a higher risk as increased water flow can stress pipes and connections.

We are closely monitoring the system throughout and our focus remains on returning the pipe to service as quickly and safely as possible. When the system is stable, we can lift water restrictions.

Calgarians will see an increased presence of City crews and emergency responders in the area around the feeder main as we return to service.

We expect to share more details on timelines tomorrow.

ROADS AND MOBILITY

Westbound traffic on 16 Avenue N.W. currently remains closed between 49 Street and Sarcee Trail N.W. Eastbound 16 Avenue is expected to fully reopen ahead of the Wednesday morning commute, while westbound lanes will reopen in phases, starting with the inside lane. Please pay attention to road signs as speed limits may be reduced. Additional short-term closures are expected in Montgomery and Bowness to support Water Services return-to-service work. Use caution when travelling through the area.
