UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier isn’t sure Jon Jones has the selflessness to be a great coach in MMA amidst Gable Steveson’s ascent.
UFC legends Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones reignited their rivalry as coaches on ALF Reality 3, a Russian reality television show, earlier this year. Jones and Cormier trained and coached some of the top MMA prospects in the region, and reportedly, shared some tense and cordial moments during the season.
While ALF Reality 3’s season hasn’t been launched, as of this writing, we’ve gotten some brief glimpses into what went on behind closed doors between Jones, Cormier, and their respective teams. After previously hoping to create a friendship with Cormier, Jones recently labeled Cormier a ‘d——‘ and called his two-time UFC rival a bad coach to his athletes.
Along with his ALF Reality 3 duties, Jones is plotting a return to the Octagon later this year and is training one of MMA’s most intriguing heavyweight prospects, Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson. Steveson could potentially get an invite on Dana White’s Contender Series later this year.
Daniel Cormier: Jon Jones doesn’t have the selflessness to be a great coach
Despite Jones’s vast accolades and accomplishments in the sport, Cormier questions whether or not Jones can be a truly great MMA coach, comparing him with Khabib Nurmagomedov and other fighters-turned-coaches.
In a recent appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show, Cormier shared a brutally honest assessment of Jones as a coach after their time coaching on ALF Reality 3.
“Honestly, after spending all that time with Jon in Thailand, he’s different today than he was back then,” Cormier said.
“He’s not that same person that he was back when he and I were [fighting]. I just know…you know what Khabib is? And why he’s such a great coach? Khabib is the most selfless person you’ve ever met. He can put his athletes above himself, in front of him, in everything that he does. In order to be a great coach, you cannot have an ego. You have to become secondary to everyone that you coach. And Jon, he’s still active and on the roster, and I don’t know if he can be as giving and selfless to make [Gable Steveson] the true star of the show. You have to make your athlete the star of the show…
“I watched Khabib spend a lot of time away from his family to be with those guys to make that they’re ready,” Cormier continued. “I just don’t know if that’s Jon.”
