Local residents are being warned not to share personal or financial information with anyone claiming to be soliciting on behalf of the hospital without official verification

Sault Area Hospital is advising the community to be cautious about potential fundraising scams invoking the hospital’s name.

According to a news release, a local business was recently contacted by an individual claiming to be raising funds for a children’s magazine feature, stating that the donation would be directed to the hospital.

The hospital is not involved in this initiative, the release said.

While some community groups do raise funds with the hospital’s endorsement, any legitimate fundraising associated with Sault Area Hospital or the Sault Area Hospital Foundation is communicated directly through official channels.

Brandy Sharp Young, director of corporate affairs at the hospital, said some official channels include the Sault Area Hospital and Sault Area Hospital Foundation websites, verified social media platforms, media releases, event, and the foundation’s newsletters and mailings.

The hospital encourages anyone who receives suspicious donation requests to:

Not provide any payment or personal information;
Report the incident to Sault Area Hospital immediately at SAH Corporate Affairs (705) 759-3721;
Contact local authorities if you feel you may have been targeted.

Sault Area Hospital is investigating this matter and is committed to protecting the community and its partners, the release says.
