A strangles outbreak is spreading among horses in Kelowna and West Kelowna, with multiple barns reporting confirmed cases.

The highly contagious bacterial disease spreads through direct contact or contaminated equipment and surfaces.

Local stables have implemented strict quarantines and biosecurity measures to prevent further infections, and some horse events and shows have been cancelled or postponed.

Veterinarians are urging horse owners to closely monitor animals for fever, nasal discharge, and swollen lymph nodes, and to contact a veterinarian immediately if symptoms appear.
