The Canadian Football League’s winter meetings are underway in Calgary, and representatives from all nine teams are discussing every aspect of the game, on and off the field.
CFL on TSN analyst Glen Suitor told the SportsCage that he is keenly watching to see what the mandate of the Replay Centre will be moving forward.
“They can in real-time radio from Toronto, see it on replay and in say to the referee pick up the flag. We’ve seen that happen, and it happens in the NFL. I saw it a couple of times on pass interference for sure. There was a penalty flag on the field. They went back and quickly looked, and within seconds, the on-field official said there was no flag on the play, let’s keep going, the ball was placed, and away they went. I think the problem is that when you switch to the replay centre, calling penalties for holding at the line of scrimmage or for a player holding a receiver in his jam inside five yards is a little too long. All of these things that happen every single play.”
“Because they’re subjective,” Suitor added. “Some people look at it, depending on what colour goggles you’re wearing, and say that was definitely a penalty, why didn’t they call it. I think we get into a lot of muddied water, and the replay center is becoming so intrusive into games that it really affects game flow, and the goal should be in these meetings, how do we get fewer penalty flags?”
