A Durham police officer was injured in a shooting after responding to a call about an armed person in Oshawa. CP24’s Melissa Duggan reports.

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating after Durham police officer and a suspect were both shot during a response to an “armed person call” in Oshawa on Sunday morning.

Durham Regional Police Service says they were called to the area of Simcoe Street South and Wentworth Street East.

During the interaction, officials say an officer and the suspect were both shot.

CP24 has learned that the shooting occurred at a home on Cedar Street.

It’s unclear what time the incident occurred, but at 11 a.m. police noted there was a “significant police presence” near Simcoe, south of Highway 401. Several officers were seen in and around a business called All Spa & Hot Tub at 744 Simcoe St. S.

The injured officer was transported to a Toronto-area trauma centre in “critical but stable condition.”

The suspect, meanwhile, was taken to a local hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening, injuries.

Resident heard 3 ‘pops’

A man walking his dog in the area told CTV News Toronto that while he didn’t see what happened, he heard three “pops.”

“A cop was standing with his hands on his head like, ‘What did I do?’ I even got it on film. He shot him right down here,” said the man, pointing north on Simcoe.

“Right where that SUV is.”

The Police Association of Ontario, which described itself as the “unifying voice for 46 police associations and 33,000 sworn and civilian police personnel across Ontario, offered its support for the injured officer in a post on X.

“We are praying for the DRPS officer who was shot today responding to a very serious call in the Oshawa community,” PAO wrote.

“This is yet another reminder of the risks that our members face while protecting the communities they serve. Our thoughts are with their family, friends and colleagues at the Durham Regional Police Association during this difficult time.”

Oshawa MP Rhonda Kirkland said her “heart is with the Durham Regional Police officer who was critically injured today while protecting our community in Oshawa.“

“I am holding their family, loved ones, and fellow DRPS officers close in my thoughts during this incredibly difficult moment. We owe a profound debt of gratitude to the brave men and women who put their lives on the line daily to keep us safe,” she wrote in a post on social media.

“Our community stands united, hoping and praying for this officer’s full recovery.”

Investigation continues

The SIU, a civilian agency, is called in to investigate when police are involved in an incident that results in death, serious injury, sexual assault, and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.

Durham police say an update is expected to follow.

Roads near the scene of the incident are currently blocked off, including Simcoe, which is off limits from Bloor to Erie streets.
