The final four are set in the NFL playoffs.
In next weekend’s conference championship games, Seattle will host the Los Angeles Rams for the NFC crown, while in the AFC, New England will travel to Denver to play the Broncos.
The playoffs in the CFL and NFL are the best times of the year, as the heightened urgency of win-or-go-home pushes teams to pull out all the stops, including emptying the trick-play section of their playbooks.
Legendary Saskatchewan Roughriders quarterback Darian Durant reflected on the SportsCage on one trick play that he will never forget.
“There was a trick play that was called with Weston Dressler, and it was a reverse pass where the quarterback goes out the other side of the field. All I told Weston all week was, “Give me a chance.” Even if I’m covered, give me a chance. We were in Edmonton at Commonwealth Stadium, and George Cortez called the reverse pass, and Weston threw it up to me. I was covered a little bit. He gave me a chance, and I was just so unathletic at the time. I couldn’t jump. I couldn’t get off the ground. The ball just went so far over my head, and I thought it was a great throw. So I’m more disappointed in him for calling the play and giving me an opportunity, and in me not being able to make a play, than in not calling it at all. I’m just mad I didn’t make it happen, and I’ll never forget that. Never.”
Durant admits they executed the play in practice.
“Every time. Every time. But that’s just how it is, man, in practice. It’s easy. And then you get in the game, and something always goes wrong.”
