The Vancouver Canucks could target a Dallas Stars forward if he ends up hitting the waiver wire between the end of training camp and start of 2025-26 regular season.
We’re less than seven weeks away from the start of the Vancouver Canucks’ training camp, with the team hoping to turn things around in a big way and get back to the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
As the summer rolls along, Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin is still trying to add to the team’s roster, ideally a centerman that can play on the second line or someone that can fill a depth role on the NHL roster, but so far he hasn’t had any luck.
Dallas Stars forward could be potential waiver wire target for Vancouver Canucks
Every year towards the end of training camp, a significant number of players end up on the National Hockey League’s waiver wire as teams try to finalize their respective rosters while also hoping certain guys can sneak through and be assigned to the American Hockey League.
This year will be no different with the most busiest time for the NHL’s waiver wire expected to be between October 1st and 5th, before rosters are due to the league and it could be an avenue that Patrik Allvin may explore in order to add to his group.
In a recent article on Canucks Army, Stephan Roget named several potential waiver wire targets for the Vancouver Canucks and among them is Oskar Back of the Dallas Stars, who spent the entire year in the NHL following three seasons with their AHL affiliate.
It was an okay rookie campaign for the Swedish forward, who registered 16 points in 73 games, along with two assists in 11 contests during the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but Roget says that the possibility of a prospect breaking through could lead the Stars to potentially placing Back on waivers.
“He has never been a prolific point producer, but gets by on his size and willingness to use it to protect the puck. He’s been getting better and better at distributing it from there, and is said to be quite good at utilizing his teammates. He could be someone who could score more in a better situation, and at worst, seems like someone capable of holding down a bottom-line career for a long time.” Roget said about Oskar Back.
While Oskar Back isn’t the most ideal piece for the Vancouver Canucks, especially given they could just fill a bottom-six role with a prospect of their own, he could come in and give Adam Foote a reliable defensive forward option, possibly someone who could feature on their second penalty killing unit.
Claiming Back off waivers, assuming he ends up there in early October, would also allow the Canucks to leave a prospect in the minors to develop a bit more while playing top-six minutes.
Back, a native of Karlstad, Sweden, is set to begin a two-year contract this fall, which comes with a cap hit of $825,000 US and he’s eligible to become an unrestricted free agent in July 2027.
