Samsung might be preparing to change how new Galaxy devices guide users through setups by switching the default navigation method from buttons to gestures. Both options have long been available on Galaxy phones, but Samsung has always defaulted to the classic three-button layout during initial setup. That could soon change.
One UI 8.5 may let you choose between gesture and button navigation
A new setting spotted by SammyGuru writer Gerwin van Giessen in an early One UI 8 build suggests that Samsung is testing a setup-time choice between gesture and button navigation. We can confirm this change isn’t on the latest foldables, which run One UI 8 at boot. It seems plausible then, that One UI 8.5 could have the navigation switcher during the initial setup.
The Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 still boot into button-based navigation by default, and users have to manually switch to gestures in Display Settings. If this new toggle rolls out widely, it would mark the first time Samsung actively prompts users to pick between the two during the out-of-box experience.
Keep in mind, this doesn’t mean Samsung is removing the button layout. You’ll still be able to switch back to whichever option you prefer at any time. But changing the default carries weight, as most users tend to stick with whatever option is presented first. Of course, after some time using the device, you might find gestures just as handy.
This move would also bring Samsung more in line with Google’s design direction, as Android 16 emphasizes fluid gesture transitions and more immersive full-screen interactions. The setting isn’t live yet in public builds of One UI 8 and hasn’t appeared on new flagships either. So it’s possible we’ll see it debut in One UI 8.5 or a future update.
That said, we can expect the feature to land with the Galaxy S26 series, perhaps. The upcoming Galaxy S26 Pro, Galaxy S26 Edge, and Galaxy S26 Ultra will run One UI 8.5 at launch, which makes sense.
