‘Upon further review’ may be three of the most despised words in professional football right now.
Fans of both the NFL and the CFL have voiced their displeasure with the results of in-game video replay, especially when it comes to receivers making catches and defenders intercepting passes, sorry Buffalo Bills fans.
TSN’s Glen Suitor admitted to the SportsCage that he is frustrated, too.
“The goal that I’ve heard over and over in both leagues is to get it right. Okay, we have talked at length about the fact that might be an impossibility. When you add subjectivity, getting it right is a matter of opinion. I think even clear and obvious goes too far. There were some that I thought were clear and obvious that weren’t penalties, some that were penalties that shouldn’t have been, and some that were penalties that shouldn’t have been.”
“So that’s all, subject to which kind of coloured goggles you have on. So if the goal is to get it right, and we can’t get it right, then what are we trying to do?” Suitor added. Because right now we’re taking great catches off the board because some part of the ball, as the player’s coming down, his knee touches first, and the defender’s touching him, they’re all in a big ball, they’re going down, he’s got control of the football, and his knee touches, that is a catch. He is down right there by contact, first down. So why are we analyzing it to a point in both leagues where we are trying to take catches off the board?”
