National Capital Region—Today, the National Capital Commission (NCC) Board of Directors granted federal land use and design approval to the schematic design for the Alexandra Bridge Replacement Project.
The goal of schematic design is to establish the overall vision before moving into more detailed design development and construction. This approval allows the integrated project team and its future design-build partner to continue preparatory work needed to advance toward construction.
The preferred concept design for the bridge was approved in January 2025. It features three arches flowing over the river, alluding to the eels that have long called the Ottawa River home, offering visual interest both above and below the bridge. Two gathering points will provide generous space for people on the bridge deck to enjoy the spectacular views towards Parliament Hill and the Gatineau Hills.
Originally built over 120 years ago for trains, horses and wagons, electric streetcars, and pedestrians, the Alexandra Bridge has reached the end of its lifecycle and must be replaced.
The integrated project team, led by Public Services and Procurement Canada, will continue to advance the progressive design-build procurement process. Construction is set to start in 2028.
