A couple of fishermen from Port au Choix came to the rescue of a caribou that had broken through the sea ice and was struggling in the water.

The animal couldn’t get back up on the ice which kept breaking away, and it couldn’t swim back to shore because of the surrounding ice.

That’s when Vernon Lavers and Milton Offrey jumped into action.  They were able to break a path through the ice with their fishing boat to allow the caribou to get to the beach and back on all fours.

Brandon Gould, who caught the whole incident on video, says despite her time in the water the caribou seemed to be none the worse for wear.

“She ran down the road, out over Cliff Rock,” says Gould. “She seemed healthy enough.”
