Ontario’s police watchdog says it’s invoked its mandate after a man died in a Friday night collision in Ottawa’s south end.
Ottawa police said the crash happened on Bank Street between Morningside Avenue and Boyd Road, near the rural community of Vernon.
Kristy Denette, a spokesperson for the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), said it was investigating as Ottawa Police Service officers “may have been in and around the area at the time of the man’s death.”
Denette said more details will follow after investigators arrive at the scene.
The man has not been identified.
The SIUÂ investigates incidents involving police and civilians that have resulted in serious injury, death or allegations of sexual assault.
As of early Saturday afternoon, road closures were still in place near the crash.
