UPDATE: Surrey shooting death likely not tied to extortion, gangs

An early morning targeted shooting in Surrey on Saturday, Jan. 24 has left one man dead and another transported to hospital with gunshot wounds.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has taken over the investigation of the shooting, which happened in the 12500 block of 91 Avenue at about 4:55 a.m. Saturday morning.
Surrey Police Service officers called to the shooting found two men apparently suffering from gunshot wounds, an SPS release says. SPS officers, Surrey Fire Services and BCEHS rendered aid to the victims.
One man was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene; the other was transported to an area hospital by BCEHS, police say.
IHIT has now taken over the investigation, and investigators are working in partnership with SPS to complete “priority investigative tasks,” police say.
Investigators do not believe the shooting is connected to the BC gang conflict or extortion.
“The investigative team believes this to be a targeted homicide, between people known to each other and they are working to understand the totality of the circumstances surrounding the shooting,” says Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT. “The presence of gun violence in a residential neighbourhood continues to be of concern for communities and police. We are liaising with our policing partners to collect evidence, conduct interviews and advance this investigation.”
Investigators are asking anyone with information, CCTV or dash camera footage to call the IHIT information line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or email ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
Surrey has had three homicides in 2026. Surrey had six homicides in 2025, with five of those shootings. That’s according to the Surrey Police Service, who haven’t included three police-related shootings in their tally.
In 2024, Surrey recorded nine homicides and in 2023 there were 12, in 2022 there were 21, and 10 in 2021. In 2020 there were 12 homicides, 21 homicides in 2019 and 15 in 2018.
The most the city recorded in any given year was 25 in 2013, breaking the previous record of 21 in 2005.
