PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Brown women’s tennis team (1-0) launched their spring season with a 4-3 win over the University of Portland (1-1) on Saturday at the Pizzitola Sports Center.Â
“A gritty win today against a quality Portland team today. Portland competed extremely well, and we had to fight really hard to match their intensity and fight.” Broadbent Family Head Coach Lucie Schmidhauser said.Â
Opening the match, the Bears claimed a doubles win as Hannah Shen and Dani Ben-Abraham defeated Alaia Rubio Perez and Maria Galatescu, 6-2. On the second line, Abigail Lee and Chloe Qin dropped their match 6-3 to Dariya Radulova and Lexie Flores. Playing third, Anne Moody and Francesca Saroli fell 6-0 to Nadine Arbaizar Martinez and Meagan Pearson, with Portland ultimately earning the doubles point.
“In doubles, Dani and Hannah played aggressively and didn’t give their opponents any opportunities to get into the match,” Schmidhauser said.
In singles, Ali Maguy battled but dropped a 7-5, 6-2 match to Alaia Rubio Perez at the first line. In response, Hannah Shen claimed one of the Bears’ singles points by outlasting Dariya Radulova (6-1, 1-6, 6-4) at the second line. Abigail Lee, competing at the third line, secured another point by defeating Nadine Arbaizar Martinez 6-3, 6-3. Portland’s Maria Galatescu took the fourth line win, 7-5, 6-2 against Dani Ben-Abraham. Sari Woo contributed the Bears’ fourth point with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Lexie Flores at the fifth line, while Anne Yang clinched the victory at the sixth line, topping Meagan Pearson 6-4, 6-2.
“In singles, Annie and Abbey put us on the scoreboard with their singles wins. They both competed well and had clarity on how they wanted to play strategically. Sari evened the score at 3-3 with a surgical and decisive performance at line five singles. Hannah’s clutch performance in the third set to win her match was an exciting way to finish out the match and take the match 4-3.”
“Both Hannah and her opponent competed extremely well, with the match momentum swinging back and forth with each game. At 4-4 in the 3rd set, Hannah was able to break her opponent with some gutsy ball striking and then held her serve at 5-4 to give us the win,” said Schmidhauser.
