One person is dead following a serious crash that closed a significant stretch of the expressway in Kitchener on Monday morning.

According to Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the southbound ramp from Highway 7 West to the eastbound lanes of Highway 8 have been closed following the collision.

According to Sgt. Kerry Schmidt of the OPP, a driver on the ramp, lost control of their vehicle, went over the shoulder of the highway, down the embankment and onto the highway below. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

Schmidt reported that this is the second vehicle to fall from the ramp onto the highway below on Monday morning.

In a video shared to social media, Schmidt said snow plowed onto the shoulder of the ramp had created an elevated surface where vehicles could potentially hit the snowbank and slide over the concrete wall and onto the highway below.

“Plows are coming through, clearing the highways and pushing that show off to the side. In this case, they can’t push it over the wall because it would go down onto the highway below,” said Schmidt.
