We mentioned it in the past few hours, but Kent Hughes is excellent at pulling off good trades for the Montreal Canadiens.

However, that’s not his greatest strength.. at least, in my humble opinion! His biggest strength so far lies in contract signings.

I don’t think people fully realize just how well-positioned the Montreal Canadiens are for the future when it comes to their salary cap.

Read the following carefully (this also applies to the Carolina Hurricanes)…

“Assuming the cap continues to grow, by 2029-30 this group of players (Aho, Ehlers, Slavin, Jarvis, Miller, Stankoven, Blake) will have an average cap hit that’s the equivalent of $5 million under last year’s cap.”

And it’s the same for the Canadiens!

“The Habs are in a similar situation; in 2029-30, the group of Suzuki, Caufield, Slafkovsky, Dobson, and Guhle will be making around ~31% of the cap. That’s on average the equivalent of about $5.5M under last year’s cap each.

A brilliant move by Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens when it comes to salary structure

This confirms exactly what we thought!

Do you realize how much this could completely change everything for the Canadiens?

It’s as if, last season, all of these players were making $5.5 million a year.

That’s an absolute steal for the Montreal Canadiens. It’s brilliant cap management by Kent Hughes, and it could allow the Habs to go after a few more big swings.

At the very least, they’ll have the cap space to do it.
