Numerous crashes across Quinte region

Hwy 401 between Belleville and Brighton is a no go Tuesday morning.

There have been multiple, multi-vehicle collisions called in, with the first being just before 8 a.m.

There was near zero visibility in the area at the time.

One crash in the eastbound lanes involved 17 vehicles, but miraculously no one was killed.

Multiple tractor-trailers are said to be involved in many sites, with some passenger vehicles involved, and a cube van.

One of the big rigs also caught fire and was destroyed.

The City of Quinte West brought a bus to the highway to get people to a warming centre.

No vehicles are being allowed on the westbound lanes as far east as Shannonville Road, while eastbound traffic is not being allowed on at Glen Miller Road.

Police are now attempting to turn around vehicles to go in the opposite direction to get off the highway.

Those on the 401 are reminded to remain in their vehicles by Belleville Fire Chief Dan Smith.

Meanwhile, there have been numerous vehicles that have gone into the ditch and off the road, including a propane truck that flipped onto its side in Tyendinaga Township and a passenger vehicle that went into a hydro pole on Vermilyea Road, near Huntingwood Drive.

There has been another closure on the 401, this time at Odessa.

Ontario Provincial Police say Highway 401 west is fully closed at Lennox & Addington Rd 4 due to a collision involving two transport trucks. 

Police say there is no access to Hwy 401 west from Lennox & Addington Rd 4 or from the Napanee ONroute.

Motorists are asked to avoid travel if possible.
