Google is reportedly adding more liquid glass-like blur to Pixel devices in Android 17.

According to 9to5Google, images of internal builds have been spotted showing that Google is continuing to update Android’s visual design (released with last year’s Material 3 Expressive redesign), with additional system flags referring to the new look as “blur.”

Throughout the OS, it is expected that the System UI will switch from solid light or dark to the “blur” effect that lets you see what is behind what you are interacting with.

As expected, that means the volume bar, the container that houses the slider, mode switcher, and other components, will all be translucent. Interestingly, these items will also be tinted based on your dynamic colour theme.

Overall, Android 17 is expected to be a smaller visual redesign than last year’s overhaul. According to 9to5Google, some components (including the new “blur” feature) will see updates, but everything else will largely stay the same.

It was also noted that, compared to Apple’s recently released Liquid Glass, Android’s new look will be more subtle. It is also currently not part of Material Expressive for apps, so we shall wait to see whether Google will bring the new design feature to the OS or if apps will also receive a similar overhaul.
