Midfielders Youri Tielemans and John McGinn have both been important players under Unai Emery, who is now looking to bring in former Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz on loan as cover.
Tielemans has an ankle injury, sustained in Sunday’s win over Newcastle, while McGinn required knee surgery after being injured against Everton on 18 January.
Emery had also said the club were “not convinced” about signing loan midfielder Harvey Elliott permanently.
“The problem we have with Harvey is that this year he is on loan, and in case he plays matches we must buy him,” said Emery.
Elliott has only featured five times under Emery, with an obligation to buy for £35m based on him playing 10 Premier League games for the Midlands club.
Options are required and it appears Luiz, who is currently on loan at Nottingham Forest from Juventus, is the answer.
AC Milan and England midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek has also been linked with a move.
