“Unfortunately, my wife succumbed to breast cancer, coming up on two years (ago) now, and this was an opportunity in my mind for her life to have legacy and meaning,” said Gary Sallaway, vice-president of the Tee’d Off at Breast Cancer event. “It was the ability to give back to the community and, hopefully, nobody else will have to go through what she did.”
The $52,372 raised at last September’s event was donated to the BC Cancer Foundation and its campaign to raise $5 million for the new Kamloops cancer centre, which is expected to open to the public in 2028.
“The impact of this donation really is incredible. Patients undergoing breast cancer and other cancers, over 50 per cent of patients require radiation treatment during their cancer diagnoses. Currently, BC Cancer delivers radiation treatment in Kelowna,” said Mischa Mueller, executive director with BC Cancer Foundation for the Interior and North. “The new BC Cancer Kamloops Centre will be an incredible addition to this community to deliver cutting edge radiation treatment right here at home.”
