A Video of a brave elephant mother’s last-minute rescue of her baby has garnered an impassioned response from animal lovers and mothers alike across the Internet.

This elephant mom’s quick action saved her child from being swept away in the currents of a flooding river in South Africa’s Kruger National Park. Her heroism serves as a reminder (as if one were needed) that all mothers are heroes, regardless of their species.

Thanks to historic flooding in Kruger National Park, riverbeds that would normally be bone dry are gushing with rapids capable of sweeping away unsuspecting baby elephants.

As this video shows, this precious little baby elephant almost suffered that horrible fate. Thankfully, their mother sprang into action. She battled the raging current while fighting to keep her balance and grabbed a hold of her baby with her trunk to stop the surging river current from carrying them away.

There were more than a few heart-stopping moments where she appeared to lose her footing, and her baby slipped out of her grasp, but nevertheless, she persisted, never allowing the powerful current to separate her from her child for more than a split second.

Her poor baby was scared the entire time. You can see their little trunk furiously trying to grab on to their mama, but the current is just too strong, and they kept getting swept further down the river each time they tried to reach out to her.

As harrowing as the situation was, this elephant mama had nerves of steel. Her determination never wavered, and she never gave up. In a clever move worthy of any costumed hero, she realized that if she let the current carry her for a second, she would be able to catch up to her baby.

That’s exactly what she did. Once the current brought her to them, she corralled them with her body, shielding them from the forceful current that was trying to carry them away, and pushed them towards the river’s edge, where the water was weaker.

Now, they were able to easily stand and even walk against the current and back onto dry land. The Internet was absolutely floored by this elephant mother’s heroic rescue.

Instagram user all4rach commented, “Did anyone else stop breathing for a moment!?” While Instagram user beth_mcalpine_art had a similar reaction when they wrote, “Well done, mama! My heart nearly stopped there!”

While Instagram user lawrence_in_east_asia93 noted how smart this elephant mother was to handle this terrifying situation in the way that she did, “These animals are so smart. Look at how she got it behind him so that he’s anchored.”

Some people, such as Instagram user calliecat1214nyc, remarked how a mother’s instinct to protect her child is universal, transcending species, when she wrote, “No matter what the species, a mother will always protect her babies.”

Elephant Mothers Have Incredible Protective Instincts

Elephant mothers fiercely protect their young. This often takes the form of them creating a shield around their babies when they sense that danger is nearby. If the family is around them, each member will help to form this shield to protect their youngest members.

This protective instinct was on display in the video, where this elephant mother used her body to shield her baby from the powerful current, allowing her to get a hold of them and then move them towards the river’s edge, where they were not in danger of being swept away by the current.
