West Ham United are close to signing Chelsea centre-back Axel Disasi, with a deal advancing to the final stages, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Disasi has been heavily linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge this month, with a host of clubs in the Premier League reportedly interested. The centre-back was exiled to the Chelsea bomb squad earlier in the season by Enzo Maresca, but he was given a glimmer of hope when Liam Rosenior arrived.

Disasi was recently welcomed back into first-team training lately, after previously training away from the senior squad. Despite Rosenior’s helping hand, Disasi hasn’t been fully implemented into the squad in terms of playing in the side, and he is now edging closer to heading through the exit door at Stamford Bridge.

West Ham Close to Defender Deal

According to journalist Romano, West Ham are now close to signing Chelsea centre-back Disasi, with a deal at the final stages.

The ‘monster’ centre-back has struggled to make an impact at Chelsea this season, with an exit being inevitable since the start of the month. The Hammers have focused a large portion of their recruitment on bringing in new attackers this month, and have somewhat neglected other positions up until now.

There’s no doubt they need to add more firepower to Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad, but strengthening their defensive line would have also been beneficial. It appears they are now close to getting a deal over the line for a new centre-back, continuing what has been a very busy month for the capital club.

Disasi Deal a Risk for West Ham

Although West Ham certainly need to bring in defensive reinforcements, the signing of Disasi could be a bit of a risk for Nuno. The centre-back has struggled to play any minutes at all in recent months, so it’s going to take him a while to become match fit.

Disasi has barely even trained with the senior squad at Chelsea, meaning there is a strong chance that he’s fallen behind in terms of his sharpness. Whether he’s capable of playing regularly at the top level remains to be seen, but it’s certainly a risk for West Ham.
