A Prince Edward County native has been nominated for her second Juno Award.
Emily Fennell, aka Miss Emily, has received a nod for Blues Album of the Year for her record The Medicine.
She spoke to Quinte News about the external recognition.
“You know I’ve heard people say I don’t care if it’s recognized or anything like that and I say you know what – I do. It’s just how I’m built. I make music for people to hear it. Every single song I write usually ends up on a record at some point in time. This album has new stuff on it and then it has stuff I wrote 20 years ago.”
We asked her how the music flows if some of the writing came from decades ago.
“I’m very authentically me on and off a stage, on a record and that consistency of not having to play a character, really helps with the flow, what I’m doing, where I’m at in life and how the music comes together for a record.”
She says the truth in the music keeps all emotions on the table.
“I mean the title track The Medicine is about the opioid crisis and that’s a sad topic, but that’s why it’s so important the other songs are around it to cushion it, to create hope.”
The Juno Awards are on CBC March 26-29.
