Struggles continue for Astros after eventful trade deadline

  • August 4, 2025

Despite making moves at the MLB trade deadline to shore up an injury-riddled lineup, the Houston Astros’ woes continued in their first series with the new-look squad.

The ‘Stros were swept by the Boston Red Sox, with a combined run differential of 15-5 across the three road games.

The series started with a 2-1 extra-inning heartbreaker, where first basemen Christian Walker drove in Houston’s only run with a solo homer in the second inning.

In the middle game, the Astros jumped out in front 2-0 before allowing six unanswered runs in a 7-3 loss.

On Sunday, new third baseman Carlos Correa got the scoring started with a solo homer in the top of the fourth inning. Boston would respond immediately with a six-run frame in the bottom of the fourth. That score would hold for the 6-1 defeat.

Don’t let the results be a distraction from Correa’s solid play since returning to Houston. He had three hits across the three games, including the aforementioned home run on Sunday.

The sweep dropped Houston to 62-50 overall on the season. Despite losing eight of their last 10 games, the Astros still have the lead in the AL West. They are 2.5 games ahead of the Seattle Mariners and 4.5 games ahead of the Texas Rangers.

The Astros are third overall in the AL behind the Detroit Tigers (three game lead) and the Toronto Blue Jays (2.5 game lead).
