ATLANTA — Probably the most surprising thing I heard regarding Texas at SEC Media Days this week was coach Steve Sarkisian telling Horns247 the Longhorns don’t have a clear-cut No. 2 quarterback – yet.
When I asked Sarkisian if redshirt freshman Trey Owens had established himself as the backup QB behind starter Arch Manning, Sarkisian said, “We don’t have a backup quarterback yet.”
The competition to be the Longhorns’ No. 2 quarterback between Owens, early enrollee freshman Karle Lacey, who goes by KJ, and Troy senior transfer Matthew Caldwell, who arrived in Austin in June, will be settled in training camp, Sarkisian said.
Only once in the last 14 years (2019) has Texas been able to make it through a season without needing to play the backup quarterback due to performance or injury.
