Victoria local and Order of Canada recipient David Bouchard is releasing an Ojibwe origin story of the dreamcatcher on Feb. 10, meant to help children foster a more powerful relationship with their inner selves.

In Dreamcatcher: Grandmother’s Web (Medicine Wheel Publishing), Grandmother Spider weaves a protective web to catch dreams that are “not as they seem.”

Powerful guides appear in the book, including the humble wolf who represents East, the strong bear (North), and the thoughtful eagle (Within). Their intention is to encourage readers to look to the Seven Directions, prominent in Indigenous American traditions, as inspiration for healthy and harmonious living. Beyond the cardinal points, these directions include Above (Sky/Father Sky), Below (Mother Earth) and Within (the inner self).

The book addresses universal childhood doubts and feelings of weakness, reminding readers of their inherent strengths.

Its message is brought to life with bright, bold colours and symbolism, illustrated by Metis artist Kristy Cameron.

Bouchard has won awards for several of his other books, including The Drum Calls Softly and I am Raven.

He was named a Member of the Order of Canada in April 2009 for his achievements and advocacy in literature for Canadian children, having published over 80 books.
