After Cleveland Browns rookie Shedeur Sanders earned a Pro Bowl nod, his dad gave him props for doing something he was unable to do during his NFL career.
“My son did something that I didn’t do,” Deion Sanders said on the We Got Time Today podcast. “He made the Pro Bowl in his first year. I made it in my third year. But he made it in his first year, so he’s got that over me right now.”
Sanders was named to the Pro Bowl earlier this week as a replacement for New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye, who is on his way to the Super Bowl.
“Thank you God,” Sanders said in a statement. “I’m beyond excited and extremely grateful for all the love and support from the coaches, players, and fans. This wouldn’t be possible without the support behind me. Still plenty of work to do.”
Sanders didn’t exactly have the rookie season he’d hoped to. After sliding to the fifth round in the NFL draft, Sanders didn’t make his NFL debut until November when he came in for an injured Dillon Gabriel.
Soon after, he was named the starter for the remainder of the season. He played eight games, throwing for 1,400 yards, eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions. The Browns went 3-4 with Sanders starting under center.
The Pro Bowl nod surprised some after a bit of a shaky year, but it nonetheless gave him bragging rights over his father and former coach.
He now has some work to do to chase his father’s other accomplishments, though, as Deion Sanders earned eight Pro Bowl bids, six First-team All-Pro honors and won a pair of Super Bowls.
