The Saskatchewan Roughriders have agreed to terms with American returner James Letcher Jr., per sources. Barring anything unforeseen, he’s expected to sign with the team.
Letcher Jr. was limited to nine games in 2025 due to injuries and was scratched by the Montreal Alouettes for the 112th Grey Cup. He returned 39 punts for 428 yards, fielded 19 kickoffs for 476 yards, and caught five passes for 42 yards and one touchdown.
The five-foot-seven, 180-pound speedster was Montreal’s nominee for Most Outstanding Special Teams Player in 2024 after recording 1,112 kickoff return yards and 924 punt return yards. He led the league in combined return yards and scored two touchdowns, one on punt return and one missed field goal return.
The 26-year-old joined the Als as a rookie in 2023 and played four games while replacing an injured Chandler Worthy. He also recorded four receptions for 21 yards and three carries for 25 yards with Montreal.
Letcher Jr. played collegiately at Washburn University, an NCAA Division II program located in Topeka, Kan. He recorded 228 grabs for 2,992 yards with 29 touchdowns in 48 games. While playing for the Ichabods, Kansas City native returned 68 kick-offs for 1,678 yards and scored three touchdowns, brought back 49 punts for 611 yards plus two scores and carried the football 60 times for 366 yards with two touchdowns.
Pending CFL free agents can negotiate with teams across the league during the communication window, which closes on Sunday, February 8. Players can agree to terms on a contract with a particular franchise; however, the deals are not legally binding and can’t be made official until after free agency opens on Tuesday, February 10.
