CAF Member Who Fought NL Wildfires Dies in Latvia

Gunner Sebastian Halmagean (Canadian Armed Forces)

A member of the Canadian Armed Forces who recently passed away in Latvia spent part of the summer helping to battle forest fires in this province.

Twenty-four-year-old Sebastian Halmagean of Hamilton, Ontario died in Riga last Thursday. His cause of death has not been released, but the matter is under investigation by the Canadian Armed Forces and Latvian police.

Halmagean was a member of the 6 Canadian Combat Support Brigade, based in Gagetown, New Brunswick.

Former Premier John Hogan says last August, Gunner Halmagean was part of a group of 80 Canadian Armed Forces members helping to fight wildfires in the province. He fought the difficult Paddy’s Pond fire helping to prevent its spread, and helping to protect the transmission lines.
