NEW YORK (WABC) — Olympic soccer is coming to New York City in 2028, the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games announced on Tuesday.

NYC FC’s Etihad Park stadium will host Olympic group stage and knockout soccer games.

Construction to build the Willets Point, Queens, stadium has yet to begin but is scheduled to be completed in 2027.

In 2028, the matches will begin in Queens and move from East to West across the country, to minimize travel demands.

New York City joins Columbus, Nashville, St. Louis, San Jose and San Diego in hosting group stage and knockout games.

Final-stage matches, including the men’s and women’s gold medal games, are confirmed for the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

The men’s final is scheduled for July 28, 2028, followed by the women’s final on July 29, 2028.

Brad Sims, New York City FC CEO, said hosting the matches at the future home of NYC FC will “showcase the city on the world stage” and “further elevate” the growing soccer culture.

“Witnessing a home Olympic Games is a once-in-a-generation opportunity,” Sims said. “With today’s announcement, we are already seeing the impact our stadium will have, as one of the world’s most prestigious competitions in the Olympic Games comes to New York City.”

Registration is open for the LA28 Olympic Ticket Draw now through March 18.
