The provincial government is signaling its opposition to a proposed Marine Protected Area off the province’s south coast by terminating the MOU reached to conduct a feasibility assessment of the project.
Provincial Affairs Minister Chris Tibbs has formally notified the MOU’s signatories – including Parks Canada the Miawpukek First Nation, the Qalipu First Nation and the Town of Burgeo of the change.
The province says it cannot support a National Marine Conservation Area on the south coast due to the potential risk to aquaculture, fishing and mining operations in the region.
The provincial government says protecting the environment while fostering economic development “requires careful balance.”
The province is also opposed to the proposed redesignation of Sandbanks Provincial Park as a national park.
