As the Canadian Football League’s free-agent negotiation window remains open, one trend is starting to emerge. More and more contracts are multi-year.

The most significant thus far was the three-year contract extension signed by B.C. Lions Canadian quarterback Nathan Rourke.

On the SportsCage, TSN CFL analyst Glen Suitor noted that the deal could become a trendsetter in the league.

“This leads to the discussion on these longer-term contracts. Austin Mack was released in Montreal after signing a three-year deal. Many people on social media right now are saying this is the problem with the league. This is why players don’t want to settle in a city, bring their families, and all that. This is pro football, and both sides of the equation need to be discussed here.”

“A long-term deal for Nathan Rourke is outstanding for the team, but it doesn’t mean for a second that he’s locked in and can’t try again in the NFL. He’ll have that clause in the contract; they all do. So, it doesn’t matter where he is in his contract; if the NFL comes and puts some real money on the table, because until they put real money on the table, they’re not completely gonna look at you, they’re not completely serious, they’re just bringing you down as an arm. Maybe they’ll take a look, but unless they put some money on the table, like big money, I don’t think Nathan’s going anywhere. The Lions have locked him up so that he doesn’t get into any sort of free agent issue in Canada.”
