Two people sustained non-life-threatening injuries after a vehicle drove off the Highway 427 overpass, crashing onto Highway 401 and hitting a tractor-trailer.

Ontario Provincial Police say snow and speed may have played a factor after a vehicle went flying off a Highway 427 overpass and crashed into incoming traffic on Highway 401 in an incident that was captured on video.

It happened on Feb. 1 at approximately 6:55 p.m., police said in a news release.

The vehicle was travelling south on the 427 at the time when the driver struck the right side of the overpass to the 401.

“The vehicle ramped up and over the concrete barrier and upon landing, collided with a transport truck on the eastbound lanes on Highway 401 before finally landing on its roof near the Eglinton Avenue exit on the highway,” the OPP said in a news release.

Two people were transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Dashcam footage of the incident, posted to social media and obtained by CTV News, shows a vehicle flying off the overpass and crashing into the trailer of a transport truck travelling along the highway. In the footage, another truck that was travelling behind the tractor-trailer, is suddenly covered with debris as the driver quickly comes to a stop.

Last month, two drivers drove off the Highway 8 flyover in Kitchener, Ont., just hours apart. One driver was killed.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said at the time that snow-clearing efforts on the ramp may have played a factor.

“Plows are coming through, clearing the highways, pushing that snow off to the side,” Schmidt said. “In this case, they can’t push it over the wall because it would go onto the highway below, and so it’s pushed up against the edge.”
