The FFAW is applauding the provincial government’s decision to withdraw their support for a National Marine Conservation Area on the south coast.
Yesterday, the province terminated the MOU that was reached to conduct a feasibility assessment of the project.
There has been strong opposition to the idea ever since it was first announced, with many arguing it would be detrimental to the fishery in that area.
The FFAW says the province’s decision acts on a commitment that premier Tony Wakeham made during the election last fall, and that government is prepared to act “decisively” in support of the fishing industry.
The union argues that there is no evidence that the designation would result in meaningful conservation outcomes, and that the restrictions would “undermine livelihoods” while allowing other industrial activities to continue.
