Shut the front door: the NWT government is ordering new doors for Hay River’s health centre because the old ones couldn’t cope with the cold.

Hay River’s health authority has issued multiple notices – the last was on January 22 – warning patients and visitors that its main entrance is out of order and directing them to the emergency department entrance instead.

Approached for more information on January 22, the town’s health authority directed questions to the NWT government’s Department of Infrastructure.

In a February 3 statement, the department said the health centre’s front doors “have been affected by the extreme cold temperatures over the past couple of months.”

“The Department of Infrastructure has assessed the issue and repaired the door on several occasions, including replacing the circuit board. Despite these efforts, issues persist,” a spokesperson stated.

“At this point, replacement doors have been ordered. Given the current status of general supply chains and delivery times, it may take some months for them to arrive. When we have them in hand, installation will be quick and will resolve this issue.”

Until that time, the spokesperson concluded, residents will need to continue using the emergency entrance.

The cost of the repair work wasn’t given.

The $52-million health centre opened in 2016.
