Newton will buzz with out-of-town visitors March 13-15 during the 2026 edition of Surrey Mayor’s Cup, one of the city’s largest annual sports tournaments.
More than 300 teams will play Surrey FC’s spring break tournament, the soccer (or “football”) club announced, meaning fully booked hotels and busy restaurants in Surrey that weekend.
Registration closed Feb. 1 for the tourney, which welcomes players, families and coaches from B.C., Alberta, Ontario, Washington and Idaho for a weekend of soccer, community and sportsmanship.
Newton Athletic Park is where most games are played, with more action at pitches across Surrey in U8 to U18 divisions (age eight to 18).
“With 235 traveling teams coming to Surrey, the tournament transforms the city into a true football hub, showcasing diverse playing styles and incredible young talent,” says a Facebook post on Surrey Football Club (FC).
Before the first whistle blows, close to three dozen volunteers pack and deliver tournament kits across multiple fields weeks in advance, and line fields so games can run all weekend long.
In other Surrey FC news, the club announced Daniel Davidson (Boys) and Vinay Bahia (Girls) as head coaches of their 2013 BCSPL teams.
“Both coaches are long-standing members of Surrey FC, having already worked closely with this age group and others across the club. Their understanding of our players, development pathway, and club philosophy positions them well to lead these teams. We’re excited to see the continued growth of this group under their leadership.”
On the final weekend of January, the club welcomed Adam van Koeverden, Canada’s Secretary of State for Sport, to Newton Athletic Park for a chat with players, coaches and local MPs.
“During his visit, we had the opportunity to discuss preparations ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the importance of federal investment in community sport, and to showcase our home and the role it plays in developing players at every level,” Surrey FC posted on social media. “A great conversation about the future of soccer in Canada and the impact strong community facilities have on growing the game.”
This fall, from Oct. 6-12, Newton Athletic Park will welcome 24 of the top U-15 soccer teams (representing each province) to a pair of national championship tournaments, for girls and boys divisions.
Canada Soccer has often picked Newton Athletic Park to host national championships. In October 2024, Surrey FC hosted the 100th-annual edition of the organization’s national championships for adult club teams. Officially known as the Toyota National Championships, the two tournaments featured top amateur teams from across Canada battling for the men’s Challenge Trophy and women’s Jubilee Trophy.
Weeks earlier, in September 2024, it was a winning weekend of soccer for Surrey FC on home turf at Newton Athletic, host of the 2024 edition of the regional Masters tournaments for men’s and women’s amateur clubs. The annual Canada Soccer-backed competition features men’s over-35 and women’s over-30 clubs from across Canada.
