LA MIRADA, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine women’s tennis team battled the heat on Wednesday in its season opener against Biola. The Golden Eagles had some highlights against the Red and Black, but Biola ultimately prevailed by a count of 6-1.
Captain Bryn Johnson was able to secure the first point of the year at the No. 1 singles position. She took a 6-4 lead after the first set before her opponent withdrew.
Fellow returner Kristyna Dvorakova also put forth a sterling effort at No. 2 singles. She won the opening set 6-4, lost on a tiebreaker 7-6 (8-6) to tie the match and then Ivet Stancheva pulled away late with a 10-6 victory down the stretch.
Keona Gutierrez Dearmond drew Biola’s Dafne Andres at No. 3 singles and was up for the task. After losing the first set 6-0, the Merrimack transfer was within 5-2 before Andres sewed up the victory.
Just like Dearmond on the court, Concordia’s Ashley Aziz, Mianna Robinson, and Mikayla Avila also made their debuts for the Golden Eagles against Biola. The Red and Black also secured the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead.
The Green and Gold get right back out on the courts on Thursday, Feb. 5 as they visit Azusa Pacific less than 24 hours after playing Biola. The match time is slated for a 2:30 p.m. PT start in Azusa.
